Erected in 1880, the building has been established for the CCBB Banco do Brazil and the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro.

Beginning in 1989 gained a cultural center and today consists of two theaters, four exhibition halls, a library with more than 100,000 volumes in computerized collection, auditorium, cinema and video rooms.
