Padre João Maria Bust and Square

In recognition of the tireless work of Father John Mary, Rio Grande do Norte, so the call on "The Holy Father" The square that bears his name in Upper Town in Natal, live every day with hundreds of faithful who ask and thank both the graces received through the "Priest of the Poor."

Father John Maria Cavalcanti de Brito was born on June 23, 1848, in Clay's Backyard Farm, belonging to the municipality before the Caicó and today, Garden of Piranhas. Son of Amaro Cavalcanti de Brito Soares de Barros and Ana Cavalcanti, received baptism at his home, the custom in those times Seridó region.

The young John Mary just completed his studies in 1871 where he received the subdiaconate on November 6 and November 30 the diaconate, on the same date was ordained a priest by the bishop of Fortaleza Dom Luiz dos Santos. On December 10, a Sunday, celebrated his first Mass in the parish of St. Anne matrix Caicó, realizing his oldest dream. In 1876 he was appointed vicar of Sabugo Santa Luzia, Paraíba, and then take back to the parish of Acari in the year 1877. The year 1881 is probably the most important in the life of Father John Mary, this year the vicar Christmas, Father Jose Herminio missionary fell ill and thus takes over from the 07th August of that year the parish of Our Lady of the Presentation Christmas, extending over the next 24 years. He was a man of behavior introspective, dark skin, sunburned from hiking, resorting every believer at the time of extreme distress. The year 1904 arrived in Natal with the scourge of smallpox, the priest devoted mainly to help the victims of the epidemic. A strange custom of the priest was to give the network to be asleep when someone else needed, from sleeping on the floor.

According to reports, excessive work and dedication to the poor led to his death at eight o'clock on the 16th of October 1905, at fifty-seven years old, where his body buried in the Rosemary Cemetery.

One hundred and one years have passed and the first signs give the beatification process of Father John Mary. This process involves doing four distinct historical research surveys containing all of the religious life, the recognition of the whole community; forwarding the case to the Vatican and the investigative analysis of miracles attributed to the religious. Process that is still in its first phase.
