National Park of Jaú

 

 

The Jau National Park is the largest National Park in Brazil (2,272,000 hectares) and the largest park in the world in tropical rainforest continuous and intact. The Jau National Park is located in the municipalities of New Airão 11537 and Barcelos, 220 km from Manaus / AM, straight. Its name derives from one of the largest Brazilian fish, Jau (the Tupi ya'ú), which also gives its name to the main river in the park. One of the most remarkable peculiarities of the Jau National Park is the fact that this is the only conservation unit in Brazil that fully protects the watershed of a river full (approx. 450 km) and bulky - Jaú preserving ecosystems of black waters. This park is an important exhibition of Amazonian ecosystems. The flora The botanical studies developed in the PNJ cataloged so far about 400 species of plants. Several of these species are restricted to certain environments found in the park. The woods and forests igapó of land plants have completely different compositions. Species like the igapó macucu macaricuia and are found exclusively in flooded forests. The fauna The pesquisodores have found a rich fauna of the NPC, comparable to many protected areas of the Amazon. So far, have been cataloged 263 species of fish within the limits of the NPC, some of which were not known to science. This represents a good part of ictiofouna described in the Negro River Basin (500 species), reinforcing the validity of the Park as a protected area in the Amazon. Rivers and lakes The NPC is the only park of Brazil to protect the basin of a river of black water, the river Jau. Rivers, lakes and streams in the PNJ is very important for flora and fauna. The algae produced in this system form the basis of the food chain that includes fish, birds and mammals, including man. The factors that determine the production of algae, such as light, temperature and dissolved nutrients in water vary with the size of the watercourse. For example, the amount of light is lower in small streams than in lakes, due to interception of sunlight through the trees from the banks. As for the dry land forests are in areas of higher elevation and are almost never flooded. Other environments such as compinaranas, barns and buritizais have a restricted distribution within the Park.
