Institute Geografico Historico do Amazonas Museum

Sponsored by the State and the Amazon city of Manaus the Institute is situated in the oldest area of Manaus (the building dates from 1917). It is also called by many as "The House of Bernardo Ramos" - Bernardo Silva Ramos de Azevedo (1858/1931) founder, organizer and first president. The governor of Amazonas, through the Virtual Library of Amazonas, seeks to rescue the entire collection of Instituto Geográfico e Histórico do Amazonas (IGHA), a collection of constant studies of Amazonian geography, history, archeology, sociology, cultural anthropology, linguistics and related sciences - the source for much of the historiography of the Amazon.

The site houses the  Museum Crisantho Jobim with historical, archaeological and ethnographic relics. The site was recently restored and tumbled, as well as its entire collection. ​In addition to contact with the ancient Indian pottery and other archaeological items in the region, the visitor will find some curiosities in the museum. In the rooms of IGHA, for example, are all seats of the original Opera House, made of wood and rattan-of-India. Another is the researcher and the chest German anthropologist Theodor Koch-Grünberg, who made several expeditions in the Amazon until his death in 1924. In the piece of furniture are notebooks, some clothes and tools of the scientist. Grünberg has written several books on the Amazon's indigenous people, and is considered by many the greatest source of work 'Macunaíma', by Mário de Andrade.
