Festival Cearense de Quadrilhas no São João de Maracanaú

By the end of June, Maracanaú, 20 km from the capital center, hosts the Festival de Quadrilhas do Ceara, with the participation of many "quadrilhas" (kind of folk groups of square dancers) from all over the state of Ceara. It is one of the largest bonfire festivals in Brazil. The crowd gathers to dance, eat typical regional food, corn-based dishes, such as tamales, hominy, popcorn, corn cake, etc.

The celebrations also features bonfires and balloons, the latter banned due to the high rate of fires caused by them. Besides the "quadrilhas"  there are the forró bands. The dispute takes place in "quadrilhódromo" of a thousand square meters. In total, the mayor of Maracanaú offers the best quadrha  trophies and prizes. About 95 to 100 groups join the party.  In addition, the festival promotes great shows with participation of famous pop singers and music bands, as well.
 

The mega event occurs in the Junina City built especially for the festivities. Mounted in an area of nine hectares, the city is located between the New Campus Fashion and Maracanaú CEFET (Federal Center for Technological Studies). Throughout its length there are two major stages, along with its giant screens, cabins, scenic city, an area for presentation of cultural attractions, quadrilhódromos with bleachers to five thousand people and amusement park. The area also stalls and kiosks for the sale of drinks and typical foods, generating jobs and income for thousands of people. It is estimated to generate about two thousand indirect jobs and a thousand direct jobs during the completion of St. John celebrities in July. The event's security is guaranteed by the Military Police, an average of 80 officers per night, and 200 security contractors. The party has also the support of the Fire Department. The St. John of Maracanaú is financed with the support of the Federal Government, Ministry of Tourism, the Municipality of Maracanaú and private companies. The best and most traditional St. John of Ceará, starts by the end of June and lasts na average of 15 days. It has had success with the public, attracting thousands of people each year because of its joy, innovation, security and large shows.
